Most halls we are called into have already been treated once. A contractor supplied panels by the square metre, fixed them where there was wall space, and the hall still echoes. That happens because auditorium acoustic treatment is an acoustic design problem, not a panel supply problem — and the difference shows up the moment someone speaks from the stage without a microphone.

What we do: measure the hall, set a target RT60 from its intended use, calculate the absorption required, specify materials from our own acoustic panel range, install with our own teams, and re-measure on completion so you get a report rather than an assurance.

What auditorium acoustic treatment actually fixes

A hall can be architecturally impressive and acoustically unusable. The complaint is rarely phrased in acoustic terms — it is that the back rows cannot follow a speaker, that music turns to mush, or that the PA system has been upgraded twice with no improvement. Those are symptoms of four underlying defects, and a competent design addresses all four rather than the most obvious one.

Excessive reverberation

Plaster, glass and concrete reflect sound repeatedly. Each syllable overlaps the next and speech becomes unintelligible before it reaches the rear seats. This is what most auditorium acoustic panels are installed to correct.

Flutter echo

Sound bouncing between two parallel hard surfaces produces a rapid ringing repeat. Common in halls with parallel side walls and no diffusion in the design.

High background noise

HVAC rumble and traffic ingress raise the noise floor and destroy the signal-to-noise ratio the hall needs. This is soundproofing rather than absorption, and it needs a separate scope.

RT60 — the number the whole design turns on

Reverberation time, written RT60, is how long sound energy takes to decay by 60 decibels after the source stops — the gap between a speaker finishing a word and that word dying away in the hall. Every auditorium acoustic treatment project begins by establishing the target RT60 for the room's intended use, measuring what the room currently does, and calculating the absorption needed to close the gap. Which panels, how many square metres and where they go all fall out of that calculation. A supplier quoting panel quantities from a floor plan, before measuring, is guessing.

Site survey & measurement

We visit the hall, record dimensions and surface finishes, and measure existing RT60 across octave bands to ISO 3382-1. Background noise level and HVAC contribution are logged at the same visit.

Acoustic design

Target RT60 is set from intended use and IS 2526 guidance. We model the treatment, calculate the absorption required in sabins, and place material where it does the most work rather than spreading it evenly.

Material specification

Absorption coefficients, fire rating, durability and finish matched to the design and to the architect's intent. Every product specified with published NRC data.

Manufacture & installation

The question to ask every supplier

Most auditorium acoustic treatment contracts in India end at installation. Ask whether the quote includes post-installation RT60 verification. The answer separates acoustic design from panel supply.

Systems

Acoustic panels and systems used in auditorium treatment

No single product treats a hall. A working design combines absorption, diffusion and controlled reflection in the right proportion and the right locations. These are the five systems we specify most often, all manufactured in-house across our EchoStop®, PerfoAudile® and Auraluxe® ranges.

Acoustic clouds

Horizontally suspended panels above the seating and stage. Clouds control ceiling reflections and add absorption without sacrificing room volume, and can be angled to direct early reflections toward the audience rather than absorbing them outright.

Best for: high ceilings, exposed services, halls where a full acoustic ceiling isn't possible.

Acoustic baffles

Vertically suspended absorbers hung in rows. Baffles present both faces to the sound field, making them the most efficient absorption per unit of material — the standard answer when a large volume needs treating and wall area is limited.

Best for: large-volume halls, multipurpose auditoria, lowest cost per sabin.

Grooved acoustic panels

Timber or MDF panels with machined grooves over an absorptive backing. Grooved surfaces channel sound into the backing while the profile scatters what remains, so you get absorption plus diffusion — which prevents the dead, lifeless quality that over-absorbed halls suffer from.

Best for: side walls, rear walls, stage surrounds where finish matters as much as performance.

Fabric wrapped acoustic panels

A rigid mineral or polyester core wrapped in acoustically transparent fabric. The highest absorption per square metre of the five systems and available in effectively any colour, which is why they dominate rear-wall and side-wall treatment in auditoria.

Best for: rear walls where echo control matters most, primary reflection points, maximum NRC.

Acoustic wall panels

Our engineered wall panel range, specified where treatment needs impact resistance and durability alongside absorption — lower wall zones, corridors and halls in daily institutional use.

Best for: high-traffic zones, educational campuses, anywhere panels will get knocked.

How they combine in a hall

A typical auditorium acoustic treatment design uses fabric wrapped panels on the rear wall to kill the long-path echo, grooved panels on the side walls for absorption plus diffusion, and clouds or baffles overhead to bring the volume under control — with the front third of the side walls deliberately left reflective to support the stage.

NRC varies with thickness, backing and mounting condition. Test data sheets and fire rating certificates are available on request for every product.

A note on fire safety. Auditoria are assembly occupancies, so the fire performance of acoustic materials is a statutory matter rather than a preference. Ask whether flame-retardant treatment is integral to the material or applied as a surface coating — coatings degrade, and a hall that passed at handover may not pass in five years.

Why auditorium acoustic treatment projects go wrong

Across 25 years of retrofits, the same five mistakes recur:

  • Panels chosen before the room was measured. A quantity quoted off a floor plan is a guess. Without RT60 data there is no way to know how much absorption the hall needs, and over-treating damages a room as surely as under-treating.
  • Over-absorption. Cover every surface and the hall goes dead — unamplified voices don't carry, performers lose the feedback they rely on, and the room feels oppressive. Diffusion has to be designed in.
  • Foam in an institutional hall. Open-cell foam sold for home studios has poor low-frequency performance, limited durability and fire characteristics unsuitable for an assembly occupancy.
  • Rear wall left untreated. The longest reflection path in any hall is stage to rear wall and back. Treating side walls while leaving the rear wall hard is the single most common error we're called in to correct.
  • Background noise ignored. Absorption does nothing about HVAC rumble. With a high noise floor, intelligibility stays poor no matter how many auditorium acoustic panels go up.

How much does auditorium acoustic treatment cost in India?

Cost is driven by hall volume, the gap between existing and target RT60, material specification and finish level — not by seating count alone. Two halls with identical seating can need very different treatment. We quote after a site survey, typically within a week of the visit.

Do you need to close the auditorium during installation?

Not usually. Most installations are phased around the venue's calendar, working evenings, weekends or vacation periods. We plan the sequence with your facilities team before mobilising.

Can acoustic treatment fix a bad PA system?

No, and the reverse is equally true. Amplifying speech in a reverberant hall amplifies the reverberation with it. Treat the room first, then tune the system.

What is a good RT60 for a college auditorium?

For a hall used mainly for speech and presentations, 0.8–1.1 seconds at mid frequencies. If it also hosts music performance, 1.0–1.4 seconds is the usual compromise, set against room volume and use pattern.

Which is better for auditoriums — clouds or baffles?

They do different jobs. Clouds hang horizontally and can be angled to reflect early sound toward the audience while absorbing the rest. Baffles hang vertically and absorb from both faces, making them more efficient where a large volume needs treating. Most designs use both.

Will acoustic panels stop noise coming in from outside?

No. Absorption controls sound inside the room; blocking external noise is soundproofing, which needs mass, sealing and isolation. If traffic or HVAC noise is the problem, that's a separate scope and we'll say so at survey stage.

Are your materials fire rated for assembly occupancies?

Yes. Our acoustic panels are available with fire ratings appropriate for commercial occupancy under the National Building Code of India 2016, and certificates are supplied with every specification.

Do you provide a report after installation?

Yes. We re-measure RT60 on completion and hand over a report comparing achieved performance against the design target.

How long does an auditorium acoustic treatment project take?

Typically 4–10 weeks from confirmed order to handover, depending on hall size, material lead time and site access. Survey and design adds 1–2 weeks before that.

Can you work with our architect's design intent?

Routinely. Grooved, fabric wrapped and Auraluxe® premium panels come in a wide finish range, so the acoustic design usually sits within an architectural language rather than against it. We work directly with design consultants on most institutional projects.
